Quantum Programming in Minecraft and Qiskit - online club for advanced students

An advanced online club for those who have already built quantum transmission in Minecraft and want to go further. What they try out in the game, they then write as a real program in Python.

Quantum computers are talked about today as the technology that will change data security, the search for new medicines and artificial intelligence. Anyone who wants to really get to grips with them has to reach programming sooner or later. And that is exactly where this club is heading.

We work on two levels at once. In the game the protocol gets built and tried out, so it stays visible what is happening. And then the children write it in Python with the Qiskit library - the same one universities and companies such as IBM work with.

A child takes something with real weight away from this club: they can write a quantum program and they understand why it works. It is an experience most students only get during university.

What will children learn?

  • To write a quantum program in Python using the Qiskit library - a professional tool.
  • How quantum communication works - and why it is safer than today's.
  • What quantum algorithms are - a search that is faster than the classical one, for instance.
  • Why a quantum computer computes differently from a classical one, and what it can and cannot do.
  • Where quantum technologies are used - data security, new medicines, materials, optimisation.
  • Quantum online simulators and work with quantum circuits - in IBM Quantum Composer.
  • Technical English, the language of the documentation and of the whole field.

Goals of the club

  • Teach children to work with a real tool that is used in research and in practice.
  • Connect the game and programming, and show that it is the same way of thinking.
  • Develop the ability to solve problems that have no single correct procedure.
  • Open the door to further study of computer science, physics or mathematics.
  • Build independence and teamwork alike.

What is included in the price of the club?

15 hands-on lessons in which children build their own quantum experiment step by step and write it in Python.
Access to the server the whole club runs on.
Help with getting Python and Qiskit running.
Tutors who know the subject and can explain it.

Who is the club for?

Children who have been through our beginner level, or who know their way around the topic from elsewhere.
Those who enjoy programming and want to try it on something that is not taught at school.
Experience with Python is useful, but not required.
Anyone who likes it when things work, and wants to know why.

What do you need in order to sign up?

A desktop or laptop that meets the minimum requirements for Minecraft.
Minecraft Java Edition and Discord account
At least basic English. The lessons are primarily in English; Czech- and German-speaking tutors are there to help whenever needed.
Python and Qiskit do not need to be installed in advance.

Funding and partners

Online club is a part of the BY-CZ Quantum Academy project (BYCZ10-263), co-financed by the Interreg Bavaria-Czechia 2021-2027 programme through the European Regional Development Fund.
The project is delivered by a Czech-Bavarian consortium of five partners: ZČU Pilsen, NTC, THD Deggendorf, DMDM and NVIAS.

The club is prepared and run by NVIAS with the support of the project partners.

Funded by the Interreg Bavaria-Czechia 2021-2027 programme.

The price is reduced for the residents of supported regions.
